Hearts on Paper: Journaling Your Prayers

In the quiet moments when your heart whispers its deepest longings to the Creator, have you ever wished to capture those sacred conversations? Do you find comfort in sharing your dreams, fears, and gratitude with the One who knows you intimately? Do you thirst for more of God throughout your day? Prayer journaling can help!

"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?"

Prayer is where we meet God. If you’re on a journey with Jesus, thirsting for more of God, seeking to delve deeper into your spiritual walk, I invite you to consider a routine of prayer journaling – an art that bridges the gap between your heart and the Father.

Expressing Your Heart: Journaling as a Conversation with the Father

Imagine opening your journal and seeing it as a letter to God, a personal conversation filled with authenticity and vulnerability. Just as you would confide in a dear friend, journaling can be a way to share your deepest thoughts with the One who loves you unconditionally. Pour out your joys and sorrows, hopes and doubts, all onto the pages of your journal. As you write, visualize yourself sitting with Jesus, allowing your words to weave a tapestry of connection between your heart and His.

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge."

Let us not forget that prayer is a two-way conversation – a divine dialogue where our words reach toward the throne room and God’s whispers resonate within our hearts. Consider starting your journaling time with a prayer to hear from the Lord, just as Samuel responded with the words, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10). Begin by surrendering your thoughts, inviting His wisdom to flow onto the pages. In this sacred space, let your heart’s reflections be a symphony of listening pauses; for as we open ourselves to His guidance, we invite His presence to illuminate the path before us. As you start each journal of prayer, consider offering the prayer of David, longing for direction from God.

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Creative Praise: Combining Art and Words as an Act of Worship

For the artistically inclined among us, journaling can be an avenue to express worship through both words and visuals. As you create, you’re not just filling pages; you’re weaving an offering of praise. Doodle a favorite scripture, paint the colors of gratitude, or sketch a scene that resonates with your current spiritual journey. Let your creativity flow as an act of devotion, knowing that the Creator delights in the unique ways you choose to express your love.

Here are some samples from my own prayer journal!

"The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him."

Gratitude Reflections: Cultivating a Garden of Thankfulness

In the rush of life’s demands, it’s easy to overlook the blessings that surround us. Use your journal as a garden of gratitude, where you intentionally cultivate moments of thankfulness. Create a section where you list the simple joys – a warm cup of tea, a smile from a stranger, the sun peeking through clouds. As you fill these pages, you’ll find your heart expanding in appreciation, and you’ll uncover a deep well of joy that springs from recognizing God’s hand in every corner of your life.

"Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

When we start to thank God for even the small things, we start to see His fingerprints on everything around us. Just as a raindrop brings life to the tiniest flower, our gratitude magnifies the beauty of God’s handiwork. It’s as if each written and whispered “thank you” unravels a new layer of His love, revealing the incredible ways He weaves blessings into our daily walk with Him. In our journaling journey, let gratitude be the compass guiding you through each page, helping to reveal the treasures of His grace and mercies.

Embracing the Journey Together

The journey of a Jesus-loving and hope-seeking heart is a beautiful tapestry of reflections, emotions, and thoughts. Through the practice of journaling your prayers, you’re stitching together a living testament of your relationship with Christ. It is such a joy to revisit my old prayer journals to reflect on the many seasons of my journey with Jesus. As part of our Jesus Sisterhood community, we stand together as women who seek hope, yearn for deeper connection, and aspire to draw closer to our Savior.

"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,”

I invite you to the practice of journaling your payers. Will you share this post to invite others to join us?

Together, we can let our journals be a place where our hearts and God’s grace meet on every page. Whether you’re writing or doodling prayers, drawing praises, or listing the tiniest or biggest of blessings, remember that we are engaging in an art that unites our hearts with the heart of our beloved Father.

let's pray

Heavenly Father, in this sacred practice of journaling, we invite You to infuse our words, art, and gratitude with Your divine presence. May our journals become altars where we lay our fears, hopes, and dreams at Your feet, offering an intimate connection with You. As we write, sketch, and reflect, may Your love and grace shine through, reminding us of Your faithfulness in every aspect of our lives. Guide us to recognize Your hand at work and to draw closer to You with each stroke of the pen. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

  1. After using your promise book for 30 days, I enjoyed doodling some of my thoughts on a special scripture verse. It has been refreshing and relaxing to take one verse and meditate on it. Thanks for your encouragement to journal as I have my devotions with Jesus. I find it really helps me retain the verse during the day and focus on His Word throughout my activities. Luv, JJ

    1. I’m so glad the Journey through the Promises of God book blessed you! There is so much blessing in slowing down our reading, reflection, and prayer with journaling and drawing. I’m so thankful for you!
